6 resources you may find at your local library

This post highlights some resources available through the Toronto Public Library. Even if you are not in Toronto, it is worth checking what your own local library offers, since many library systems provide more than just books or disc lending.

  1. LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com): an online learning platform with video courses across a range of subjects. On its own, it would normally cost quite a bit each year. One caveat: at the time, I could not figure out how to log in from my phone.

  2. O'Reilly Learning (formerly Safari Tech & Business Books Online): provides access to a large collection of technical books and learning materials.

  3. Digital classes: many Toronto library branches offer classes in DJing, green screen work, Inkscape, GIMP, beginner HTML and CSS, intro to 3D design, and more. One of the nice things is that they often use free software, which can be a great alternative to paid tools.

  4. 3D printers: some library branches provide access to 3D printers. You usually need to take one of their free certification classes first.

  5. Recording studios: some branches offer studio space for video or audio production, including green screens and computers with editing software.

  6. Museum and Arts Passes: borrow passes to places like the ROM, Science Centre, AGO, and more. These are usually first come, first served, but they can save a lot of money.
